Those of you still stuck with a "last-gen" system still have the chance to experience something truly great this holiday season. Rock Band, although designed especially for next-gen consoles, has launched across North America today, for the PlayStation 2 system. That's right, Harmonix doesn't care whether you're a spoiled brat who owns the latest systems
and games.

That, and of course the fact that tens of millions own a PS2 right now, so the game should sell like water in the desert. Anyway, let's see what the Rock Band Special Edition Bundle for the PlayStation 2 is all about, shall we?

Developed in collaboration with Pi Studios, the PS2 version of Rock Band does well at offering most of the same game modes and tracks available with the next-gen versions (PS3 and Xbox 360). Most importantly though, it includes Band World Tour and Score Duel, which allows drum vs. drum, guitar vs. guitar and vocal vs. vocal play.

Surely you're already picky about it, hearing that "most" of the game modes and tracks are available with the PS2 port (get a PS3 if you don't like what the PS2 game has to offer), you should know that this "inferior" version still includes a total of 58 tracks spanning every genre of rock, ranging from alternative and classic rock to heavy metal and punk. Official word from all three companies involved with the game have confirmed it, so there's no reason not to consider Rock Band for PS2 as a Christmas present for someone you love, or even for yourself.

Since the game makes much use of those Fender peripherals, the Rock Band Special Bundle features a wireless Fender Stratocaster guitar controller, an electronic drum kit, real drum sticks, a microphone (they're the same with both PS2 and PS3 versions) and the game disc of course, all going for $159.99. Not very cheap, yes, but certainly a lot cheaper than anyone had hoped before the official pricing.

Those opting just for the Rock Band game disc will have to cough out no more than $49.99. Rock Band is rated T for Teen (lyrics, mild suggestive themes) by the ESRB. Europe's gamers should keep an eye out for Rock Band (all versions) in Q1 2008.
