A few weeks ago, a survey brought forth by Sony Computer Entertainment America about the upcoming God of War III game and its collector's edition generated a lot of speculation on the Internet. The reason was that one of the options that players could select to see in the CE of the very anticipated title was a Blu-ray disc with the first and second games of the franchise.

This quickly made a lot of people speculate that Sony had devised a way to implement a software-only backwards compatibility feature for the PlayStation 3 console in order to run PS2 games. As some of you know, only the first PS2 models had such an option, but were quickly eliminated from Sony's lineup.

Now, in an effort to settle the rumors, a SCEA representative has contacted Kotaku and has revealed that it is just a survey, and that nothing is written in stone as to whether this feature will appear for PlayStation 2 users and what that might implicate.

“It is simply a marketing survey. The goal of it is to do focus group testing,” the Sony rep reveals. “We're just trying to find out what would resonate with the God of War community. If that was the number-one requested thing, that would be something they would need to see if that was most technically feasible. Obviously with Blu-ray, we're able to put more content on the disc. But in terms of having seen God of War II on a Blu-ray disc on a debug and playing it that way, no, that's not something I've seen.”

So, while this may seem like a statement made to settle the urges of fans, if a lot of people want that option in their Collector's Edition version of God of War III, then Sony engineers might get to work on a PS2 emulator for the new console. Hopefully, such a thing will come in the future, if not solely for God of War, then for other titles as well.
