Sony believes that its upcoming PlayStation Vita portable console will win the hearts of core gamers, largely because it’s now focusing primarily on this feature, and its power will differentiate it from other mobile gaming devices.

The PlayStation Vita is getting ready to debut in Japan this month and will appear on February 22, 2012, in Europe and North America. Sony’s been unveiling lots of details about the games that will appear for its handheld device and talked about the device a lot in recent weeks.

Now, via VideoGamer, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios’ European senior vice president, Michael Denny, says that the Vita will be aimed at true gamers, starting with hardcore ones and slowly diversifying its offers to appeal to other demographics.

"Our mission, our vision, is that we now have a portable gaming system that is going to be massively appealing to gamers – initially core gamers, but then a wider sense of gamers going forward," he said. "We have to concentrate on our plans and make sure we supply the right games, the right experience, the right software, and the right social connectivity for the platform. I believe if you care about games you're going to want a Vita."

While Denny admits that the current mobile gaming market is extremely competitive, what with dedicated platforms like Nintendo’s 3DS, as well as multi-purpose devices like smartphones or tablets, he’s certain that the Vita will deliver a next generation experience.

"We have to acknowledge that we're coming into a very competitive landscape in the portable, mobile gaming market," he said. "But I think the main thing for us is that we are a true next-gen platform. We are going to truly differentiate ourselves from the competition, so people who do care about the gaming - who want a deeper, richer, more immersive experience with their gaming – are going to absolutely love this device.

By coupling these goals with the lineup of games that was already presented by Sony, Denny believes that the Vita will attract all gamers.

"It's been built from the ground up with creative games developers in mind as well, to give a hardware feature set that we think is unrivalled. With the launch line-up that we have as well, we feel it will be compelling to gamers everywhere."
