PS Vita owners will be able to download the brand new PS Vita firmware update 3.30 today, October 2, as Sony has confirmed that the fresh system software, which brings the ability to install themes, is set to roll out onto the PlayStation Network in the following hours.

The PS Vita has been around for some time now, but only after the PS4's launch last year did the portable console from Sony really experience great sales figures, as plenty of new home console owners realized the great advantage of playing titles via the Remote Play feature.

Now, Sony is set to roll out a major firmware update for the PS Vita, which takes its software up to version 3.30 and brings one feature highly requested by users – themes.

The new update launches today, October 2, around the world, and Sony's confirmed on the PS blog that owners of the PS Vita should get a notification about downloading the new firmware in the following hours, provided their console is connected to the internet.

Themes can be purchased and installed

The major feature in the new firmware is the possibility to install themes for the PS Vita menu, icons, and user interface.

"PS Vita system software update v3.30 will be available to download, enabling you to personalize your PS Vita’s Start and Home screens, system application icons, and the system’s background music," Sony reveals.

First up, there will be three different themes available for purchase and download via the PS Store, in the form of Crystal, Four Seasons, and Stitching. Special game-based themes for the likes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Tearaway, or Freedom Wars are set to appear soon enough. All themes can be managed via the PS Vita's settings application.

A few other features are also included in the new firmware update

Besides the ability to get themes onto your console, firmware update 3.30 also allows players to view Throphy rarity, as well as to set up events via the calendar application.

"If you’re a fan of setting up events with your friends via the Calendar app on PS Vita, you can now send event files from your Calendar to your friends using Messages or Email so they can easily add them to their own Calendar. This update will also allow you to add players not in your Friends list to your events," Sony adds.

Expect the new firmware update to become available for download in the following hours, via the PSN.
