The organization believes pigs are intelligent creatures, don't deserve being abused

First off, I really hope you're not eating a ham sandwich when reading this. Turns out pigs are social, intelligent creatures. What's more, they are loyal and highly sensitive, PETA says.

The organization was appalled to hear that, this coming July 20, cold-hearted people in the Canadian town of Empress, Alberta will take part in a “greased pig” contest.

The contest is part and parcel of the local Empress Daze festival. People who participate in it will be asked to chase after a pig. Whomever gets their hands on the animal wins the contest.

What worries PETA is the fact that, “Being trucked to and fro and subjected to the violence and general chaos of these events is a terrifying and hazardous ordeal for pigs, who often sustain severe injuries, such as broken limbs or backs.”

The organization pleas that ordinary folks, who care about the fate of pigs, ask Pat Donaldson, the contest's organizer, to find a more humane way to entertain the crowds and leave pigs be.
