Members of the organization pretended to slaughter seals in front of the Consulate

One can say many things about PETA, and not all of them necessarily nice, but if there is one thing that the organization must be given credit for, this thing is its being fairly imaginative.

On second thought, I suppose these animal rights activists must also be given credit for being persistent.

Not to beat about the bush, it would appear that, just yesterday, a group of PETA members visited the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles, US. Needless to say, they did not go there looking to enjoy a cup of tea and some biscuits with Consulate employees.

On the contrary, the activists went there to protest annual seal hunts, and, as shown in the picture above, they did not shy away from putting on quite a show.

Fear not, the man in the photo is not actually killing a seal, he's just pretending that he is in order to raise awareness of how gruesome this practice is.

“Seals can be legally killed as soon as they lose their white fur at just a few weeks of age, and most of those killed during the slaughter are less than 3 months old,” PETA writes on its website.

“Some have their skulls smashed in by sealers, and others are shot, although 85 percent of those shot are not killed by the first bullet. Many of these gentle animals are still alive when they are skinned,” the organization further details.

According to the organization, annual seal hunts must be put an end to not only because they are cruel and bloody and have no place in the civilized world, but also because people no longer have any interest in buying seal skins.

Thus, bans on the import of seal pelts are now in place in the European Union, Taiwan, Mexico, and Russia. The way PETA sees things, this just goes to show that the Canadian government would do well to outlaw this practice sooner rather than later.

Interestingly enough, the news about this protest against seal hunts comes shortly after an Inuit community lashed out at Ellen DeGeneres over the celebrity's partnership with the Humane Society of the United States, and argued that there was nothing wrong with killing seals for their meat and skin.
