Pro Evolution Soccer has fallen behind in the battle of the football sims in the last few years, but the development team at Konami believes that this year’s installment can challenge FIFA 14 because of the new engine tech it uses.

Kei Masuda, a creative producer working on Evolution Soccer 2014, tells The Official PlayStation Magazine that “Our biggest struggles were with online play. As we moved to PS3, EA changed its engine, but ours was based on the PS2 game. We only brushed up on animation and some of the AI features.”

Now Konami will use the Fox Engine for PES and that means there are more realism-related options and that it will be easier for the team to match FIFA’s array of features.

The two football games will be offered on the PC and on home consoles in the fall.
