Yesterday marked the release of PC/OS 2009.3, announced on the distribution's website by maintainer Roberto J. Dohnert. This version improves the hardware compatibility of the 2009v2 series, featuring all the regular and security updates that appeared after the release of PC/OS Maintenance Pack 3.

This latest release comes in two editions: PC/OS OpenWorkstation, which features the XFCE desktop environment version 4.6, and PC/OS WebStation. A third version, PC/OS OpenDesktop, is dedicated to computer recyclers, but it is available to them only on special request. The PC/OS Webstation is targeted towards users who want a light desktop or have a netbook, and features a Web 2.0 centric environment with many local applications, like audio players and instant messaging clients. This edition isn't based on XFCE due to issues with some models of netbooks, but the developers are trying to fix this problem.

Highlights of PC/OS 2009.3 OpenWorkstation:

· Linux kernel 2.6.24-24; · Mozilla Firefox 3.0.12; · Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.22; · OpenOffice.org 3.1; · Pidgin 2.5.8; · The GIMP 2.6.5; · More application updates.

As PC/OS is based on Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS, access to the popular distribution's repositories is made easy through the use of the Synaptic Package Manager, providing a wide range of applications that can be installed quickly and easily.

About PC/OS:

A derivative of Ubuntu, PC/OS has an XFCE desktop environment that has a similar layout to the now defunct Be Operating System. However, this distribution isn't a reimplementation of BeOS, but aims to reach a similar level of simplicity. PC/OS has the Ubuntu restricted extras preinstalled, supporting many multimedia formats out of the box. The XFCE desktop's lower system footprint means that this distribution can work even on older hardware but can also power newer workstations.
