After 8 months of testing and updates, the VIP Mod for
Counter-Strike is getting ready for release! Set to be released around February 15th, the mod will feature 9 new maps and full Assassination Style gameplay mode for Counter-Strike: Source.
What Is VIP Mod? Old school Counter-Strike players will remember a gameplay type called "assassination mode" that randomly changed a member of the CT team into a VIP. The VIP player was only allowed the pistol he spawned with as his weapon. But, he also spawned with 200 armor. The mission in this game play style was simple: "Protect The VIP Team!". The CTs were to escort the
VIP to a rescue zone to win the round. The terrorists' objective was to kill the VIP. If they did, the round ended no matter how many other CTs were alive.
This gameplay mode, maybe more so than any other, demanded team play and co-operation. It was exciting to play and was a dream for those of you that are into tactics and strategies. Unfortunately, it died when Counter-Strike: Source was released. Valve Software didn't include it in the "Direct Port" of Counter-Strike to Counter-Strike: Source.
In the summer of 2005, game programmer L. Duke started working on this add-on that would re-introduce the assassination mode gameplay style back into the game. The result is VIP Mod. The only pre-requisite to running this mod on your
CS: Source Server is that you have MetaMod: Source installed.
The Client package will be distributed via the
Vapour Content Delivery System. The server package will be available for download in a zip file off of the
PAF Files Site as well as mirrors such as File Planet and File Front. Fully functioning Windows and Linux versions will be available at the time of release.
VIP Mod received full support from Valve Software and Turtle Rock Studios in the development for Counter-Strike: Source. In the fall of 2005, employees of Turtle Rock Studios helped in the beta testing process with the mod. Due to the success of the beta tests, Turtle Rock Studios offered to help the VIP Mod Development Team by adding code to the Source Game Engine specifically for use in VIP Mod.
On December 1st 2005, Steam Update news reported that they "Exposed VIP player index to plugins/mods". This code helped integrate the independently developed mod with the Source Game Engine flawlessly. The result is a third, independent gameplay mode for Counter-Strike: Source and a full set of high quality maps developed specifically for the release of VIP Mod.
