Last week, the Humane Society of the United States announced that two hooded jackets available at Macy's, designed by none other than rapper Sean Combs, aka P. Diddy, and bearing his name on the label, were trimmed with real fur taken from raccoon dogs.
And the crime did not stop here: not only were the clothing items made with fur, but they were also misleading customers into believing that they were only an 'imitation', as their labels said they were trimmed with fake rabbit fur. After the Humane Society discovered the real nature of the trimmings, an investigation was immediately launched.
Macy's handled the situation pretty well, by instantly taking all items off the shelves and of the website. However, at the time, a spokesperson for the store refused to make any comment, saying they would maintain their silence until the results of the tests show up.
As soon as these tests were concluded, proving that the faux rabbit fur was in fact real one, skinned from a raccoon dog, Macy's canceled all orders for the Sean Combs coats. The rapper himself went public with a statement and apologized for the mishap, vouching to never make the same mistake again.
'I was completely unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and website. I have instructed our outerwear licensee to cease the production of any garments using this material immediately. I appreciate the tireless work that the Humane Society does and would like to thank them for bringing attention to this issue.', P. Diddy said.
Raccoon dogs are a species of non-domestic canines, named like this for their striking resemblance to raccoons. These fox-sized animals live in Asia where they are also captured, trapped and killed for their fur. The Humane Society has brought many cases to the attention of the public in which the people who work for the exporting companies haven't enough patience to wait for the animal to die, proceeding to skinning it while still alive and kicking.
