Most of us haven't got over the shock of hearing that Starsky and Hutch star Owen Wilson has tried to kill himself on Sunday morning. The only good thing that can be said for sure about the situation is that Wilson himself is doing better. Otherwise, everything is clouded in mystery, silence and more mystery. And already, there are those who claim that the whole story is a scam and that the actor never even attempted to end his own life. The thing is, who can contradict them? Since no official statement has been released either confirming or infirming (or even giving a little more detail on) what happened on Sunday, we're all free to believe that Wilson was attacked by a horde of invisible stampeding aliens. There are however some facts that can't be contradicted.
First of all, as I was saying earlier, no one confirmed the suicide story but no one denied it either. The one statement issued on behalf of Wilson is short and to the point. "I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time". And that's all. But the fact is, this was one of the first summers in which Wilson was absent from the beach-side fun in the sun that he was famous for among his friends and neighbors. He used to ride his skateboard or play soccer in front of his house, and was generally a relaxed, good-humored guy with a roguish grin and a pleasant personality. And while he doesn't seem like the kind of man to end his life after a failed relationship, there are some who point the finger at his recent break up with You, Me and Dupree co-star Kate Hudson, who even left her husband to be with Wilson. Their relationship ended in June this year, and Hudson is currently enjoying a steamy romance in the arms of new boyfriend Dax Shepard.
But people close to Wilson deny the photos of Hudson and Sheperd that have been all over the Internet over the past weeks, are what caused Wilson to crack. Few people know it, but it looks like Wilson had some past troubles with alcohol - which he reportedly got over by attending Alcoholic Anonymous meetings regularly throughout 2003. "Owen was very dedicated to AA and to living a clean life", declares a former AA member quoted by Star. "I knew him when he was sober, and to see him slip back into his disease was tough". This may mean nothing - and everything. But if we put together the break-up with Hudson, alcohol and some good old-fashioned depression we may well have a compelling set of reasons that spell 'suicide attempt". And while it makes perfect sense for Wilson to admit being in a fragile mental state and to need privacy, it's also a bit strange to shroud this whole affair in mystery. In the end, the general opinion is favorable to Wilson. We all wish him well, and hope he deals with all his issues and pulls through. It's just that this whole "no one knows, no one talks" policy is only adding fuel to the fire. And it sure doesn't make for a peaceful recovery.
