It's nice to know Owen Wilson is alive and well after his suicide attempt last month. He's been out of the hospital for a few weeks and seems to be enjoying the ocean and the beach while under the careful, constant supervision of his concerned family. However, Owen is either in denial or he doesn't care much about his drug and mental issues - as he has recently stunned his family and friends by refusing to go into rehab as soon as he left the hospital. Instead, he opted for what's called a "sober companion" to keep him clean, which may not be too convincing, but seems to be working - at least for the moment.
Wilson also put his acting career on hold during his recovery, and reportedly dropped out of the movie DreamWorks comedy Tropic Thunder he was set to begin shooting with his Starsky&Hutch co-star and long time pal Ben Stiller. However, it seems that Stiller has not been such a good friend to Wilson as we might have believed - or at least so it seems in the light of new evidence that seems to suggest Wilson was in fact fired from the Tropic Thunder cast days after he attempted to take his own life.
The movie is directed by movie mogul Steven Spilberg and was supposed to star Stiller and Wilson, but apparently Spilberg and Stiller decided Wilson's attempt to take his own life would put the whole project at risk and decided to ax Wilson from it completely. While it was unclear whether he would be replaced or whether his character was simply going to be written off the script, Wilson's removal was not, it seems, a decision taken mutually, as it was said at the time.
"Ben was literally sick about making a decision to fire his good friend," an insider claims, but he decided to go through with it anyway. However, in either an act of cruelty or complete ignorance, he reportedly wanted to call Wilson and break the news to him over the phone. "Ben proposed calling directly so Owen wouldn't hear the news from the press or a flunky", the same insider adds. "But after family members told them Owen was not in a good state of mind, they realized the direct approach was far too stressful".
As a result, Wilson learned that he was being axed from his family and friends. This whole story may also be linked with the rumors that have been going around that what pushed Wilson over the edge was a fight with a close friend over failing to come up with appropriate materials for a film he was making. The friend in question may very well be Stiller - but I'm banking on this whole story not being over yet, so there's a good chance we'll learn the details - and of course, keep you posted.
