It's no surprise that in the wake of Owen Wilson's (thankfully) failed suicide attempt last week a stream of controversy and speculation issued. It was, unfortunately, only a matter of time until people started pointing fingers and searching for what could have caused such a tragedy. Among all the speculation, no one really paid too much attention to Owen's desire to be left alone to heal - but I'm not even sure he was expecting any sympathy on that front. But in all the chaos, some facts did come to light (or if you don't want to call them facts, call them "highly likely speculations") about the actor's life prior to his decision to try and end his life.
One thing that has been emerging is that he was indeed having drug-related troubles. At least two persons who were close to Owen - his friend Courtney Love and former lover Kate Hudson - have not only mentioned this as a fact, but also pinned a name to the problem: troublemaker actor Stephen Coogan, who was a close buddy to Wilson. Love, who has been dating Coogan and broke up with him in 2006, states that "I was just out of rehab, and he [Coogan] was right there with the drugs. I tried to warn Owen. I tried to warn his friends ... I hope from the bottom of my heart that Owen stays the hell away from that guy". A friend of Kate's also tells how Kate asked Wilson not to allow Coogan in their house anymore. And even though Coogan (predictably) denied the accusations, which he deemed as "unfounded, unhelpful and hurtful to all concerned", it's highly unlikely that Hudson and Love are both deluded and have simply made this story up for their personal amusement.
Also, Wilson's attorney declared that his client did indeed slash his wrists but that he never had his stomach pumped for the very simple reason that he did not take any pills. He also said that while it's true that the actor was taking antidepressants, there were no other drugs in his system the moment he was taken to hospital.
As to the reason for which Wilson decided to try and end his life, everybody seems to have his or her take on it. While some friends believe Owen's recent breakup with Kate Hudson had nothing to do with it, others believe that it was the one thing that pushed him over the edge. "Seeing her happy with someone else made him happy that she'd found that, but made him hate himself so much more that he could never do it" claims a friend of the Wilson family. And while it certainly can't have been easy to see pictures of Hudson and her new flame all over the newspapers and the Internet, it's still not clear what exactly was going on in Wilson's mind when he decided he would be better off dead. Luckily for him, he's been given a second chance. Let's just hope he has enough support and strength not to screw it up.
