More details regarding Payday 2 developer's recently announced The Walking Dead game have emerged, courtesy of Reddit AMA with Overkill producer Almir Listo.

The upcoming cooperative survival horror video game was revealed last week, and the development team at Overkill Software is working with Robert Kirkman, the comic's creator himself, in order to bring the universe to life.

"We are staying true to the original, gruesome storytelling that Robert is famous for and that we know that the fans of The Walking Dead love," Overkill said.

The Swedish company's take on The Walking Dead will be set in the same universe as the comic book, rather than using the AMC series' setting.

"We're working with Robert himself. Seeing as he writes the comics, it's only natural that we'll focus on that. Personally, I love the focus on horror in the comics. We'll focus on new characters and new storylines, same universe," Listo reveals on Reddit.

Listo has also pointed out that Overkill has full creative control over the project, even though the devs are working with Kirkman and Skybound, and that they intend to deliver the ultimate cooperative horror survival experience.

"It's the same crew that did PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2, some old Starbreeze vet's + a few more cool people that I've headhunted myself - very excited to share the news about them in the coming months. Robert and everyone and Skybound are the perfect partner - this will truly be something different."

"For the first time we're independently financing and creating the game ourselves. We have full creative control, the money to pay for it, a great IP to play with and the community - you included - to help us give feedback and make it the coolest co-op experience ever," Listo says.

For the time being, considering the project's early stage of development, there is no information regarding the upcoming The Walking Dead coop game, but it's likely to bear some similarities to Payday 2, Overkill's most successful project to date.

The prospect of a cooperative survival experience is definitely an attractive one, considering the popularity of projects such as DayZ and Rust, and having horror elements thrown in makes for a unique angle on the entire thing.

It is yet unclear how Overkill plans to have the upcoming The Walking Dead game be different from Left 4 Dead or Dead Island, but we'll come back as soon as new information becomes available.
