Of a total of more than 40,000 WordPress websites in the Alexa top 1 million, experts have found that over 70% are vulnerable to cybercriminal attacks.

According to WP WhiteSecurity, 74 different versions of WordPress were identified among the 42,106 sites that were tested. 1.82% of them are still running a subversion of WordPress 2.0.

Unfortunately, only 18.55%, or 7,814 websites, are running WordPress 3.6.1 which is currently the latest version. 13,034 sites are still running a vulnerable installation of WordPress 3.6.

Experts estimate that 73% of all WordPress websites are plagued by vulnerabilities that can easily be discovered by hackers with the aid of automated tools.

“Considering the number of vulnerable WordPress installations out there, and the popularity of such websites, we are still surprised how come most of them haven’t been hacked yet,” WP WhiteSecurity’s Robert Abela noted.
