Over 64% of Users Prefer Firefox to Internet Explorer

To any browser for that matter

Which browser is better? Firefox, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, Netscape? Usually, when it comes down to comparing browsers, the five names mentioned above come into play. And although Internet Explorer dominates the browser market, the solutions that have developed in its shadow enjoy far more popularity when compared to the Microsoft product.

According to an ongoing online survey performed by SurveyWare by Net Aplications, no less than 64.17% of the participants have stated that they prefer Firefox to
any other browser. Mozilla's open source solution has had an ascendant trend for the past couple of years, and has managed to slowly but continuously erode Microsoft's share on the browser market.

Safari and Opera, the occupants of the second and third positions in the user's hearts, have also scored higher preference ratings than Internet Explorer. However, neither Safari nor Opera managed to come anywhere close to Firefox. Only 13.54% of participants have voted Safari for the best browser while Opera received 11.84% of the votes.

The Best Browser

Internet Explorer, although in the fourth position, is the big loser of this list. A total of 9.83% of the users surveyed consider IE the best browser. With the five year gap between Windows XP and Windows Vista, with IE 6 SP1 only managing a superficial impact on the browser market, Microsoft has lost a lot of terrain when it comes to customer perception.

With a share of 78.03% of the browser market, IE is not the users' first choice. Not even by far. The simple fact that there is no proportion between the IE's market share and it popularity among users should raise the alarm for Microsoft. The Redmond Company has poured a lot of effort into Internet Explorer 7 and came out with an excellent product on so many levels, but IE7 failed to impact user perception.

Why would anyone state that IE is a good browser when it's unsafe, uncustomizable, can be slow and its extensions are not working? If it wouldn't be distributed with the OS it would even less popular. The best brwoser at the moment - imo - is FF. I had a few weeks period when IE was not installed on my PC (only FF) and during this time NO spywares, adwares and viruses infected it, though the firewall was totally off many times. Since I reinstalled IE (I had to do this to make some of the programs work), my PC becomes infected as soon as I turn the firewall of.

"Survey" is a bit too generous of a word here. A true survey would require a randomly established sample that is representative of all Internet users. Then for the "results" to be of any interest, the people chosen for the sample would need to use all of the browsers, with the browser names hidden and non-pertinent factors controlled, and on and on. You know, it's that thing called the 'scientific process' that you learned in high school .
All that this (http://www.surveyware.com/) shows is that FF users are more likely to find and click on this type of thing, followed by Safari users, then Opera users.
Of course, my scorn for this type of pseudo-science silliness didn't stop me from clicking on "Opera" :)

I am an MS fan, and consequently also an IE fan.
BUT
Microsoft did ignore completely the wishes of it's customers and it's adicts when it developped IE7.
One example = customisable toolbars and the disappearance of the menu bar.
The security with IE7 is OK but MS let down it's real fans - a huge marketing mistake.
What is there more to say ?
Do I still use it : yes, but I am experimenting with FireFox which never happened before. I feel abandonned by MS and by IE due to the above ignorance.

Hi. V.A.
While you're at it, give Opera a spin as well.
www.opera.com
The FULL version of Opera is FREE and AD FREE and has been for years (there are old articles on the web about opera that cause a bit of confusion on this).
You spoke of customisable toolbars; I think you'll like what Opera can do (toolbars on top, bottom, left, right, nowhere, hidden when not in use...). The ability to customize Opera was one of the things that won me over. Be sure to spend some time on the Opera website; you'll find things there that are 'extras' beyond what's in the preferences/appearence menu and the opera:config file.
I actually have nothing in particular agains IE7 either, and for info you can make the menu bar appear temporarily by pressing ALT or permanantly by clicking on the tools button and then on 'menu bar'. But nevertheless, after spending time with them all IE7, IE overbrowsers (Maxthon, etc.), Firefox etc. Opera came out on the top of the heap for me.
Ciao,
Kenny

Today I have downloaded Firefox 3. My only regret is that I did not do this before.
The new IE 7 has slowed my internet browsing to a crawl. This on a high spec computer designed for intense gaming.
I did not know about the better security on FF either.
I will only use IE if I need direct X, however, as I rarely play internet games, I cannot see me using it for a long time.
Well done FF. Keep up the good work. :-)
