The University of South Carolina has started notifying students that their names, email addresses, and Social Security numbers might have been compromised.

The information was stored on a laptop computer stolen from a locked room in the department of Physics and Astronomy.

“Although we have no evidence that your personal information has been accessed, we strongly advise you to take measures to protect yourself from possible identity theft. You can request, via phone or web, one of the three major national credit bureaus put a free Initial Fraud Alert on your credit files,” the letter sent out to impacted students reads.

According to ABC Columbia, over 6,000 students who enrolled in one of four classes starting with January 2010 are impacted.

The incident is still being investigated.
