Apple is currently enjoying a 69% chunk of the market, but others are playing catch-up

Google’s Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad seem to have made the computing and multimedia tablets so popular, that these are already well on their way to reach the 100 million units shipped milestone.

Microsoft’s Surface will only increase the sales numbers, but we should wait and see how Samsung’s battle with Apple will unfurl later this year.

The American company has managed to secure a first win against the Korean giant, and if the war engulfs the tablet sector also, the sales will probably be a little more “modest.”

In the case everything goes well, 2012 will reportedly be the first year when 102 to 106 million tablets will be shipped.

On an interesting note, the research found that most units are Wi-Fi models, thus demonstrating that users are not willing to pay for expensive mobile connectivity and will rather use cheap, but fast wireless hotspots.
