Over 1 Petabyte (!) of Storage for Just One Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V Virtual Machine

A single virtual machine running under Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V role can have allocated in excess of 1 Petabyte of storage space. Just watch the videos at the bottom of this article in order to get a full idea of what Hyper-V, formerly codenamed Viridian, can do for you in terms of virtualization. The videos deal with Windows Hyper-V SMP Virtual Machines, Virtual Storage, and Networking. You will be able to see various virtual machines running different operating systems simultaneously in parallel under Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, the extension at which the virtual storage of a VM can be stretched by scaling the number of virtual hard disks associated to each virtual SCSI controllers per virtual machine, and the consistent support for multiple network adapters.

At the end of the past week, Microsoft made available for download the first beta of Hyper-V, the hypervisor offered as role in Windows Server 2008. The move was not anticipated, as the Redmond company initially planned to deliver the first beta for the virtualization feature of Windows Server 2008 concomitantly with the RTM of its last 32-bit server operating system. The final version of Hyper-V will drop later in 2008 as an update to Windows Server 2008, which is scheduled for launch on February 27th. "Some of the new features added since the Windows Hyper-V CTP include:

- Quick Migration and high availability providing solutions for planned and unplanned downtime
- Support for running Hyper-V with Server Core in the parent partition
- Import/Export of virtual machines
- Hyper-V now integrated with Windows Server Manager
- Integration components are now included in Windows Server 2008 meaning that when you install - Windows Server 2008 in a Hyper-V virtual machine, Windows will automatically install the ICs.
- VHD Tools support (compaction, expansion and inspection)
- Emulated video card has changed from an S3 Trio video card to a more generic VESA compatible device. (This change resolves numerous video issues with non-Windows operating systems like Linux).
- Support for up to four virtual SCSI controllers per virtual machine;
- Numerous fixes for compatibility, performance and scalability", revealed Jeff Woolsey, Lead Program Manager for the Windows Virtualization.
