The scam takes many forms, one more dangerous than the other

Bitdefender experts reveal that since it first started appearing on Facebook walls, the Pink Facebook scam has taken many forms, each trying to lure users to survey pages or other even more dangerous services that inflate phone bills. One of the variant of the Pink Facebook theme comes as a fake plugin that infects the customers’ computers.

Identified as Trojan.FBFraud.A, the plugin only works with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers, other applications being unaffected by the threat.

After it’s installed, the extension Likes the malicious site and posts a message on the victim’s wall to ensure that all his/her friends are exposed to the scam.

In the end, the user is taken to a survey site that promises great prizes and all sorts of cool features.

If they don’t carefully read the fine print, internauts can end up paying for phone services that they didn’t want, or they may be duped into sending SMSs to premium rate phone numbers.
