Charlie Wilcox from the UK has every reason to watch her back when she goes out on the street because she’s making a lot of people unhappy with her comments. Wilcox claims smoking 3,500 cigarettes during pregnancy actually made her baby healthier.

She’s been smoking since she was 14, Wilcox says in an interview for BBC3’s Misbehaving Mums to Be, as cited by the Daily Mail.

When she became pregnant, Wilcox briefly considered quitting, but then changed her mind and said cutting down a bit would be enough.

If you ask her, it was. Because each puff of smoke left her daughter deprived of the oxygen she needed to grow, she made her heart stronger and actually came out healthier than she would have had her mom quit smoking.

“It’s making the baby use its heart on its own in the first place, so that when it comes out, it’s going to be able to do them (sic) things by itself. Where’s the proof that it’s so bad to smoke?” Wilcox says.

She insists choosing to quit or to keep on smoking during pregnancy was her own choice and no one can judge her for it.

“I wasn’t ready to give up smoking. I think if I’d given up straight away, the stress would have been more harmful to the baby,” Wilcox reasons.

As long as she got herself checked regularly and she saw with her own eyes that her baby was ok and that smoking wasn’t hurting her, there’s nothing wrong to puffing away while pregnant.

“I felt her kick every day, and on every scan I went to she was healthy and growing. There is nothing wrong with her. I think she was a good weight, and she’s developing well and now weighs 13lb,” Wilcox says.

She’s even convinced that one of her friends miscarried because she attempted to kick the habit – as a coincidence, she lost the baby precisely when Wilcox was giving birth.
