Red Barrels, a new video game development studio staffed with veterans who have worked on games like Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed, reveals that its first project is called Outlast and will use the mechanics of the survival horror genre.

The game will take place in the Mount Massive Asylum, an institution for the mentally ill which has been long abandoned but was recently re-opened by a shadowy corporation called Murkoff Corporation.

The player-controlled character is called Miles Upshur and is a journalist who enters the Mount Massive Asylum undercover and tries to explore the mysteries of the area and uncover a “terrible truth” that is at the center of the facility.

The fact that the game wants to use survival horror mechanics probably means that in Outlast gamers will have to focus on moving without being noticed and will have to carefully evaluate the way they use the various resources the game offers.

Philippe Morin, the co-founder of Red Barrels, states, “There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them.”

David Chateauneuf, a co-founder of Red Barrels, adds, “Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games. We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”

Outlast will be launched on the PC via digital distribution services in 2013.

Assassin’s Creed III is set to arrive later during October, while a new Splinter Cell game called Blacklist will be launched by Ubisoft during 2013.

Both the Prince of Persia and the Uncharted franchises are dormant at the moment, although they might be revived for the next generation of home consoles.
