Four Asian small-clawed otter pups born at Woodland Park Zoo in Washington, US have recently undergone their first detailed veterinary exam, and staff at the facility are happy to announce that they are all in good health.

Zoo Borns informs that the river otter pups were born on January 20 to mom Teratai. The litter is made up of three females and one male, and the pups presently weigh between 1.2 – 1.5 pounds (0.5 – 0.7 kilograms).

The same source tells us that the baby otters have four brothers, and that the latter appear to be more than willing to help parents Teratai and Guntur look after the new generation.

“Since their birth, the parents and four brothers, born last summer, have all pitched in to build their den nest, provide support and, most recently, teach the pups to swim in a behind-the-scenes pool,” zoo employee Pat Owen said in a statement.

“The family has been busy introducing the pups to their new environment, and the pups are adjusting very well,” the collection manager went on to explain.

Despite the fact that vets have ruled that the pups are healthy and strong enough to be able to go about exploring the family's outdoors enclosure, it would appear that their dad prefers that they remain indoors, at least for a while longer.

However, it is to be expected that it will not be long until the otter pups make their public debut at Woodland Park Zoo.
