OWC reveals new iMac upgrade kits

Apple describes its iMac as the ultimate desktop computer, but OWC seems to have found more than one way to have the machine go well beyond its standard specs, creating both RAM and storage upgrades.

For Other World Computing to create products meant to replace the components of Apple products is not really a new thing.

What might still take people by surprise is the actual scope of the three new upgrades that the company prepared.

One of them is the RAM (random access memory) option of 32 GB, though this is just the latest addition to a line that starts at 8GB and goes up.

The second part of the offer is a hard disk drive with a capacity of up to 3 TB, which is well beyond the 500 GB and 1 TB drives given as factory options.

OWC also grant the possibility of using a Mercury 6G solid state drive in this 3.5-inch 'Main Bay,' with a capacity of 480 GB.

Nonetheless, the real worth of OWC's solid state drives is apparent in how up to six such Mercury 6G units can be added in place of the single 356 GB factory option.

With their capacity of up to 480 GB, they can, essentially, reach a total of 1.44 TB (up to three can be used).

“The 2011 iMac comes equipped with up to Quad-Core i7 Intel Processors and can provide performance that rivals the currently available Mac Pros except for inherent upgrade limitations based on its design and factory options,” said Larry O’Connor, founder and CEO, Other World Computing..

“Being able to add memory and drives through our Turnkey service, iMac owners now can utilize the full potential of their iMac for intensive A/V, graphics, and other professional creative services tasks and turn their machine into a full blown desktop production workstation.”
