Michael Keaton picked most Best Actor awards this awards season for his role in “Birdman,” so he was the number one favorite to win the Oscar for Best Actor at Sunday’s ceremony. In what is considered the biggest upset of the evening, Eddie Redmayne’s name was called out.

Everyone expected Michael Keaton to win, so this felt like a snub (which, of course, isn’t to say that Eddie didn’t deserve to be there, up on stage, gushing about having the best moment of his career). Even Michael Keaton expected Michael Keaton to win.

A Vine of what is now being dubbed the saddest moment at the Oscars has emerged and gone viral. It shows the actor taking out a piece of paper as the name of the nominees are called out, clearly thinking he will be the one to walk up those stairs, to receive the much-coveted statuette from Cate Blanchett.

That would have been his acceptance speech.

Then, as Eddie is named winner, Michael looks down for just a moment, clearly disappointed, and is then seen stuffing the paper back in his pocket. By the time he looks up again, he’s got his “graceful loser” face on and you can’t even tell how badly it must sting to not get something he was sure he had coming.

Check it out.
