Mother Monster is biggest surprise of the night for viewers

In the past couple of years or so, Lady Gaga has been getting a bad rap: as sales of her music began to dwindle because the novelty factor had worn off, and she upped the ante on the visual aspect of her performances, she was increasingly criticized for going for the shock factor to divert the attention from the lack of substance in her material.

Fans know that this was never really the case, but that’s what was constantly being held against her: her wild child shtick had taken the focus from her music, and made people dismiss her as a one-trick pony.

All those haters can sit down now. Lady Gaga performed at the Oscars 2015 some hours ago and proved to the world that, when it comes to live singing, she can deliver a mind-blowing performance even though she’s usually written off as a “pop star.”

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Sound of Music,” so the Academy went out of its way to put together what is being described as a 5-star tribute consisting of a medley of the most famous songs from it, performed by none other than Mother Monster herself, Gaga.

This was one of the highlights of the evening, and according to some, an even bigger and more pleasant surprise than Eddie Redmayne’s win for Best Actor instead of Michael Keaton.

To cap it off, Julie Andrews herself made a surprise appearance at the end, and based on her wild applause, she enjoyed Gaga’s number as much as the rest of the stars, who were doing a standing ovation.

It was truly a beautiful, classy and memorable moment. Check it out.
