The theme of the Academy Awards 2013 was the music used in movies. The 2014 Oscarcast will have as theme the heroes in movies, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have announced, as reported by The Wrap.

Zadan and Meron introduced a theme in the prestigious awards gala after a long hiatus last year, and reception from the viewing public was so positive that they plan on making it a tradition.

On March 2, when the gala will take place, the industry will celebrate “big-screen real-life heroes, super heroes, popular heroes and animated heroes,” the producers say.

That gives them plenty of wiggle room because this year’s Oscars contenders are not lacking powerful, inspirational heroes. You don’t have to look further than “Dallas Buyers Club” or “12 Years a Slave” to see just 2 of these examples.

However, the theme will also – hopefully – bring in a younger audience which incidentally coincides with the “mainstream” public. The Oscars are still perceived as elitist and old, and having the hero theme will allow the Oscarcast to include popular superhero movies based on comic books, which, though often snubbed by critics, have monstrous returns at the box office and please the fans.

“We wanted to unify the show with an entertaining and emotional theme. People around the world go to the movies to be inspired by the characters they see on the screen. By celebrating the gamut of heroes who have enriched our movie-going experience, we hope to create an evening of fun and joy,” the producers say in a statement.

“And that includes the filmmakers and actors who take risks and stimulate us with provocative subjects and daring characters. They are all heroes in the cinematic landscape,” they add.

The nominees for the Oscars 2014 will be announced tomorrow. As part of a long tradition, until we find out who they are, the Razzie Foundation has made public the nominees for the Razzies 2014, which “celebrate” what the industry has had to offer in the past year.
