Jared Leto and his brother and mother celebrate his Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars 2014

Before the Oscars awards gala this Sunday, there was a lot of talk and speculation on how Jared Leto, Oscar nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category, would style his hair on the big night, especially since he was considered favorite to win, which he did.

Unlike at the Golden Globes 2014 in mid-January, where he rocked a “pony-bun,” half ponytail and half bun, for the Oscars, the actor opted for a more natural look, thus showing off his long, luscious hair and omber ‘do.

As host Ellen DeGeneres put it, Jared Leto was one of prettiest stars in the audience and, obviously, his hair had a lot to do with it.

His hairstylist Chase Kusero says in a new interview with Refinery29 that the actor’s glorious hair was achieved by not washing it on the day of, with product left in from the day before, when Leto attended the Independent Spirit Awards.

He also insists that they hadn’t talked about doing something particular with Jared’s hair before the awards gala, but that they did know that they wanted it to work in such a way as to not steal the spotlight from Jared himself. As Kusero puts it, Jared didn’t want people to remember his Oscars appearance just for the hair so, if that’s the case, it’s a great thing he didn’t go for another pony-bun.

When Leto walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes, his hair became the talk of the entire Internet, with many memes surfacing to “honor” such a fabulous ‘do – one that only he could have pulled off. He probably wanted people to focus solely on his Oscar win and the role that made it possible.

So, at the Academy Awards, Jared let his hair down, styled in loose, natural-looking waves. It might seem a bit strange to talk about a man’s hair with such details but, really, have you seen how great he looked? “Jared and I don't usually think about what we're going to do — it's kind of a feeling. The day of, we see what's going on with what he's thinking about wearing and we take it from there. I used a couple of products [at the Oscars],” Kusero says.

“He did the Independent Spirit Awards, which are a much more casual event. So, I put a little product — the Creme Pomade and the Heat Protect & Shine Spray — and we let that sit in. Then today we bent a couple of pieces with a flat iron. [I don't do the flat iron] every time, but I just wanted to separate the hair more — we wanted it to be something more natural. He's got incredible hair, but I wanted it to not look too done. We wanted it to be the most true sense of Jared Leto,” the stylist explains.

It was never their intention to have the actor end up on best hair lists with some of the most gorgeous female stars but, now that it’s happened, Kusero knows for a fact it was meant to be. And let’s not kid ourselves, Jared does have amazing hair.
