Oscars 2014: Ellen DeGeneres’ Selfie Is Most Retweeted Photo of All Times, Breaks the Internet

Step back, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, we have a new queen of social media!

If you knew only very few things about Ellen DeGeneres, you still probably expected her hosting gig of the Oscars 2014 to be the best – and, as it turns out, it was. Not only did she find the perfect balance between humor and a more serious tone, but she also made the awards gala more hip by taking it to social media, in a major way.

Sure, she also broke Twitter in the process, but who’s keeping tabs. Above is a selfie Ellen tweeted during the Oscarcast, which took place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles and wrapped up just minutes ago.

It is officially the most retweeted photo of all times, getting over 1 million retweets in just 30 minutes and thus taking down US President Barack Obama, who had held the crown until then.

Right now, the photo has over 2.2 million retweets and, if you have a look at who’s in it, it’s not hard to understand why: Ellen managed to get the hottest actors of the moment in one single shot. There aren’t many people who can do that.

So, from left to right, we have: Jared Leto (or half of his face), Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ellen, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, Nyong’o’s brother Peter, Angelina Jolie and Bradley Cooper, who is taking the photo.

There’s another star in the photo, but you can’t see her. Technically, she’s not in the photo, but not for lack of trying: the second photo embedded here shows Liza Minnelli trying to get in the shot. She obviously failed and didn’t get in the final shot, because she’s so tiny.

Ellen is the new Queen of Twitter.
