Alicia Quarles brings up the race issue in awkward red carpet interview

E! is a fixture on all red carpets, talking with celebrities on a variety of topics, from fashion to their personal life and their career. This year’s Oscars 2014 gala was not an exception but, unlike in previous years, there were several cringe-worthy moments.

One of them was when Elsa Pataky, Chris Hemsworth’s pregnant wife, walked the red carpet and the panel of Fashion Police said that her huge baby bump looked more like a beer gut than anything else, in a chat that was supposed to be on fashion.

Another was when reporter Alicia Quarles got a bit carried away when she interviewed Mindy Kaling on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair afterparty.

It wasn’t just that she asked her about her preferences in men that was out of line because, if you’ve ever seen one such awards coverage, you know that this type of question is common. It was asking Mindy what “color” men she likes to date that was off, as you will see in the video above.

The actress first said that her type in men was “good-looking,” but Quarles followed that up with, “OK, so… any color?” An obviously thrown off balance Kaling replied with just “Yeah,” hoping that the awkwardness of the moment would just go away.

That it did, as the reporter moved on to another question, but Twitter was paying attention – and Twitter was not happy. Of all the things to ask an actress on the red carpet, Ms. Quarles probably picked the most inappropriate, outraged viewers said on the social networking site.
