If celebrities in attendance at the Oscars 2014 had played the photobombing game, Benedict Cumberbatch would have probably won by a long shot. Check out the photo above to see what he did on the red carpet, right before the prestigious gala awards.

As U2 bandmembers and their respective partners walked up on the red carpet to pose for the photographers, as is customary, the actor, best known for his role on BBC One’s “Sherlock” and the hit film “Star Trek Into Darkness,” got up on a pedestal and popped up behind them, making sure he’d be in the frame.

He was clearly photobombing them, and he is believed to have set the tone of the evening, as more such occurrences happened later on: Jared Leto photobombed Kevin Spacey but also Anne Hathaway, Anne Hathaway photobombed Jessica Biel, Lupita Nyong’o photobomed Jared Leto, and so forth.

However, few of these actually took place on the red carpet during what has come to be known as the red carpet “ceremony.” So yes, Benedict takes home the top prize for the best photobomb of the night.

Cumberbatch’s latest film, “12 Years a Slave,” from director Steve McQueen, won the biggest award of the gala, that of Best Picture.
