It has begun! With yet another 3 good months to go until the industry’s biggest ceremony and a little over a month until the nominations are announced, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 10 movies vying for the Best Special Effects category.

As USA Today points out, it includes some of this year’s biggest box office hits that had also impressed audiences with their convincing, outstanding FX, but also this year’s most resounding flop from Disney, “John Carter.”

As bad as some critics have found it, “Carter” did have good special effects, so the mention on the shortlist was well deserved.

The shortlist comprises the following movies: “The Avengers,” “Skyfall,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Prometheus,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Cloud Atlas,” “Life of Pi,” “John Carter” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

The Academy will announce the final 5 nominations on January 10. The awards show will take place on February 24.
