Despite their honest efforts, some of the stars didn't quite get it right

Each major award brings with it good and bad fashion, and this also applies to the Oscars 2012. Having seen the former, let's have a look at the stars of whom fashion gurus say they were the worst dressed. Read on.

At the top of the list is “Bridesmaids” star Melissa McCarthy, whose dress was a complete mess – and this didn't get by all fashion mags and blogs out there.

The gown, which featured lots of sparkle and countless layers meant to cover almost every inch of skin, was custom made by Marina Rinaldi.

To list what was wrong with it would probably take longer than if you just had a look at it in the photo attached to this article, but suffice it to say that the cut was wrong, the color was wrong and the fabric was wrong.

It's a well-known fact that dressing a plus-size girl for the red carpet is more challenging than designing for a smaller size, but that doesn't mean it has to come off as unglamorous as Melissa's dress did.

The heavy embellishments on the neck and underneath the breasts, as well as the “invisible” layers on the sleeve made the gown look rushed and cheap.

Next up, a star who is usually on the best dressed list: Sandra Bullock. It's not that her Marchesa gown looked positively bad that put her in this category, voices online note, but rather that it could have – or should have – looked much better.

Made of apparently two halves of different dresses, one white and one black, Sandy's gown looked like it was held together with the silver coral band that circled her waist.

That in itself didn't make it a bad choice on her, since she can wear rags and still look fabulous. What did, though, was the fact that it wasn't fitted on her, giving the impression that she wore something that was actually meant for another, plumper girl.

Viola Davis was in a similar situation: her Vera Wang strapless gown could have been spectacular but fell flat because it had too many things going on.

The color was great on the star, as was the cut, which flattered her toned body.

However, at a closer look, that dress could give anyone migraines with the many elements on it: it had a plunging neckline, a stiff bodice, embellished details, pleats, frills, cut-outs and biased seams.

The actress earned warm praises for ditching the wig and rocking her natural hair, but she could have looked better a shade darker.

“The Artist” star Berenice Bejo, who has been a wonderful presence on the red carpet this awards season, looked completely overwhelmed and washed-out in her beaded, bottle-sea green Elie Saab dress.

The details on it were a bit too precious, making it look somewhat ice capade-y, while the color wasn't that good on her skin.

Berenice should have also opted for another hairdo too if she was that set on the dress, voices online say.

Reality star Kim Kardashian wasn't at the actual Oscar awards gala, but she made for such a ridiculous appearance at the afterparty that she must be named here.

The dress was spectacular on her curvy body, featuring an interesting pattern up-close and an even more interesting design on the skirt (cut-outs are definitely this season-s must-have!).

She accessorized with several chunky bracelets, which was a bit overkill, but the hair was good.

However, Kim looked as if she'd been dipped in bronzer, while her face appeared to have remained frozen into one expression.

It was pulled, plumped and tucked – not to mention the caked makeup.

Last but not least, Paula Patton of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.” She has a great body and the kind of figure that allows her to get away with a lot, but this was not one of those instances.

The Naeem Khan dress she wore seemed to offer too much of everything: too much cleavage, too much leg, too much figure. It was too tight, too short and too sparkly for such an occasion.

These are just some of the most popular choices for worst dressed at the Oscars 2012. If you have more to add, please feel free to use the comments section below.
