Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Emma Stone make best dressed list

One of those many unwritten golden rules of fashion says one should never wear red on the red carpet unless one wants to run the risk of becoming invisible to everyone else and especially the cameras. Clearly, that wasn't the case with these 3 ladies we're going to talk about now.

The key with wearing red for such a fabulous occasion as the Oscars 2012 is to know which type of red to choose and, just as important, to pick the right design and accessories.

Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman and Emma Stone, with some help from professional stylists (of course), hit a very high note with their red outfits on the red carpet, making the best dressed list.

Michelle Williams, for one, has earned all the fashion accolades imaginable in her Louis Vuitton tiered, strapless, rich gown.

The peplum, which is so very much on trend right now, helped her “own” the dress: she is tiny and the dress would have probably seemed like it was wearing her had it not been for this particular detail.

Because she has very short hair, Michelle opted not to wear earrings, which was probably for the best because even the tiniest diamonds could have ruined the effect of the outfit.

Instead, the star, who was in the running for Best Actress for her role in “My Week with Marilyn,” opted for a necklace and a small bow brooch on her waist, also of diamonds.

She accessorized with shoes by Christian Louboutin and a small pink clutch by Bottega Venetta. Talk about color blocking!

Natalie Portman also wore red, but to an entirely different result. Described by many as a timeless beauty, she opted for vintage for the big night.

The Oscar-winner, who seems to have bounced back to her pre-pregnancy figure in only a few months, wowed in a Dior Haute Couture dress from Rare Vintage (1954 collection).

Who says you can't wear polka dots on the red carpet?

She accessorized the strapless gown with shoes by Dior, Harry Winton jewelry, and a Charlotte Olympia bag.

Emma Stone was also a dazzling appearance on the red carpet, even though she seemed to have turned for inspiration to a dress that Nicole Kidman wore, to much success, at the Oscars in 2007.

The redhead, who was also on presenting duties for the night, looked stunning in a Giambattista Valli Haute Couture dress, with Brian Atwood shoes and Louis Vuitton bag and jewels.

The fact that her gown featured a large bow on her neck made many say that she was all gift-wrapped and ready to go – but mostly, critics praised her choice and, most importantly, the way she handled herself on the red carpet and at the actual ceremony.
