The awards season’s biggest snubs: Chris Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julianne Moore for Oscars

Yesterday, the nominees for the 2011 Academy Awards were announced. Today, the Internet is abuzz not with talk of who will win from those who got nominated, but rather of who was not nominated at all, who was snubbed.

Clearly, with “Inception” being the third most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with no less than 8 nods, writer and director Chris Nolan is the biggest snub on part of the Academy.

As E! Online also points out, while “Inception” was included in the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay categories, and despite the fact that the film was warmly received by critics and audiences alike, Nolan didn’t get a Best Director nomination.

It’s not the first year that this happens, either, voices online are saying, since the Academy also did it to him with the critically acclaimed blockbuster “Dark Knight.”

“Nolan is the only Directors Guild nominee to not rate a Best Director nomination. (Conversely, the Coens are the only non-DGA contenders to rate a joint Best Director nod.)” E! points out.

Speaking of “Inception,” another snub was that of leading man Leonardo DiCaprio, the man who was believed to be in the running for this category with both this film and “Shutter Island.” He got nothing for either film in Best Actor.

Mark Wahlberg should also have been included in the same category for his role in “The Fighter,” especially since it would seem that everyone who stars with him in the film got a nod.

“So, let’s get this straight: among those in The Fighter’s corner, Christian Bale got nominated for playing Mark Wahlberg’s brother, Amy Adams got nominated for playing Wahlberg’s girlfriend, Melissa Leo got nominated for playing Wahlberg’s mom, and Wahlberg himself got nominated for… nothing,” E! points out.

The same goes for Ryan Gossling from “Blue Valentine,” a release that got his co-star Michelle Williams a nod for Best Actress.

“Other missing-in-action actors include: Ryan Gosling, not up for Blue Valentine; Michael Douglas, not up for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps; Matt Damon, not up for True Grit; Mila Kunis, not up for Black Swan; and, Julianne Moore, not up for playing Annette Bening’s other half in The Kids Are All Right,” E! says.

“Despicable Me” was also snubbed in the Best Animated Film category, while “The Town” deserved some recognition in the Best Director and Screenplay categories, says the same report.
