It’s a well-known fact by now that, the moment the awards season begins, Hollywood goes crazy. The Oscars are the culmination of said season and the entire world knows that this is not just about the winners, the losers and the movies, as fashion also plays an important role. At this year’s Academy Awards, the gentlemen came, smiled and conquered the hearts of fashion critics.

They say it’s not easy to be a star at the Oscars – or so the same stars would have us believe, always complaining how hard it is to pick the perfect outfit, the perfect hairstyle and the perfect accessories. They’re right. However, judging by some of the men who walked the red carpet, looking this good comes almost naturally – especially when some of them also came with the best and most lovable accessory on earth: their wife, partner, fiancé or even mother.

Gerard Butler, though, came unattended and acted as if he was trying to get out of posing for pictures as quickly as possible. Dressed in a black Made to Order peak lapel single-button tuxedo, with a black, satin bowtie by Gucci, the actor graciously smiled and waved for the cameras while looking his dashing self. He seemed to be holding no grudge on Academy members for not nominating him for Best Actor, as he was joking last week, when he also said he would be faking his own win.

Robert Downey Jr., who also acted as presenter, not only came to the ceremony in the company of his gorgeous wife, Susan Downey, but he also managed to break the mold on red-carpet wear. Though not many men could pull this look off (perhaps except Johnny Depp), Robert looked smashing in a tuxedo and blue sneakers, matched with a pale blue bowtie. Of course, he color-coordinated with Susan, who wore a sparkly, strapless, long number with different shades of blue, the pale one included.

Matt Damon also came with his wife. He was dressed in Ferragamo, with Art Deco diamond and black enamel cufflinks by Fred Leighton, while she matched the long, flowing, pink dress with “rose-cut diamond fan pendant earrings, silver on gold by Fred Leighton,” as JustJared informs. Another dashing couple was that made by George Clooney and girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, he looking smashing in a classic tuxedo, while she rocked a simple and very elegant, red gown.

Another handsome, single man was Ryan Reynolds, who left wife Scarlett Johnasson at home and came to present an award and make hearts race across the world. He “chose a single-breasted, black tuxedo with a grosgrain peak-lapel, white pique front shirt with onyx and yellow gold cufflinks and studs, black grosgrain cummerbund and bowtie, and black patent leather lace-up evening shoes, all by Tom Ford,” the same e-zine says.

Share my thoughts! Well, after looking at the pictures of Robert Downey Jr. at the 2010 Oscars I really had to laugh at the idea that he had actually paid, and prbably a great deal, for that disaster he was wearing. It was a joke? Surely no-one would appear at such a prestigious occasion looking like an apprentice's first attempt at a suit? At least no Englishman worth his salt would.
