A 13-year-old orca whale that was rescued by conservationists about 10 years ago, after she had been orphaned and separated from the rest of her group, was spotted swimming off the coast of British Columbia a few days ago, on July 4.

The whale was not alone: she was accompanied by her calf. CBC reports that both Springer and her offspring appear to be in good health.

Wildlife researchers are unable to say whether the orphaned whale has given birth to a male or a female baby orca whale, but here's to hoping they'll soon figure out whether we should send Springer pink or blue balloons.

In 2002, when Springer was first spotted swimming around in Puget Sound, she was tired, hungry and lonely.

Her rescuers recollect that, at that time, she was desperately trying to befriend boats and logs that crossed her path.

Luckily, the orca whale was captured, rehabilitated and later on reunited with her pod.
