Capcom has announced that Resident Evil, the remake of the original game that started the entire series, will come to PC and consoles as a digital product in early 2015.

The company intends to revamp the game that started it all, and to return to the roots of the popular series that sold an aggregate of over 61 million titles worldwide and spawned five movie adaptations with a remastered version of the original adventure.

The first Resident Evil was initially released in 1996, and was then overhauled in 2002, with new visuals, gameplay elements, story and environments, becoming the go-to title for the survival horror video games.

The definitive revisit of the 2002 classic is intended to provide both a pleasant experience for fans of a franchise looking to relive some of the magical moments of the original in a modern incarnation, as well as an enthralling journey for those who have yet to experience Capcom's iconic game.

The game will make use of the latest in resolution enhancement technology and 3D modeling, with significantly upgraded textures and supported resolution, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, resulting in a Resident Evil world more detailed than it has ever been before.

The sound effects have also been remastered for the upcoming remake, with full 5.1 support, in order to provide a more immersive gaming atmosphere.

Furthermore, the control scheme has been updated, allowing players to choose between the original way the game was played and the alternative scheme where the character moves directly towards the analogue stick, using the current standard of console gaming.

The game will invite gamers to a journey through the streets of Raccoon City, stepping into the shoes of either Special Tactics and Rescue Service team member Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, sent to the city to find the missing Bravo team.

The action follows the team after they find themselves under attack by a ferocious pack of mutated dogs, and make an escape in the Mansion, where other horrors await them.

Players will have to venture through the dark and enclosed spaces, discovering the terrifying reality of Raccoon City, with limited ammo and survival items available and numerous traps and puzzles standing in the way of their survival.

Capcom has assured fans of the original that it doesn't intend to make any unnecessary changes to the game, in order to perfectly capture the genuine experience of the first chapter in the series, that created the survival horror genre of video games.

Resident Evil is coming to the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One platforms, sometime in early 2015.
