Wipeout 2048 might just be the most exciting video game for the newly launched PlayStation Vita handheld from Sony, and the development team who created the racing title says that getting back to the core of the anti-gravity powered competitions was always a priority to the developers.

Graeme Ankers, who is one of the game directors working on Wipeout 2048, told VG247 that “we always had this idea of setting it at season one of the sport, going right back to the start of the timeline. I think the idea of the chronologically is that the PSone version that released in 1996 was set in 2053 or 2055.

“We wanted to go back to the dawn of the sport and explore what it was like at the origin. Further back in the timeline, there’s already the existing backstory that anti-gravity was invented in 2020.”

The development team at the Liverpool Studio is a first-party video game developer for Sony and that means the team had access to some of the earliest incarnations of the PlayStation Vita and was able to use them to experiment with its features.

The game creators tried everything from Augmented Reality to different camera settings and then settled on those Vita abilities that best complemented the Wipeout experience.

Ankers emphasized the connectivity features of the device, saying, “I think the social aspect is probably the most exciting thing about it for me. That’s the key feature going forward. I think we’ve done an awful lot with the launch titles, but I think we’re only scratching the surface of the connected experience on how we can draw your friends, family and acquaintances into your gaming universe.”

Wipeout 2048 is one of the titles offering support for Crossplay, allowing Vita gamers to face-off against those who are playing Wipeout HD Fury on the PlayStation 3 home console.
