The maker of gaming systems has decided to give up neutrality

Something has just happened on the technological front that makes it seem as if the tech industry is the field where a war is being fought, rather than a place where people can delightedly explore while looking for something interesting: AMD has lost a partner.

Why does this evoke so much drama, you might ask. Because Origin PC has decided to dump AMD and offer only systems equipped with NVIDIA graphics.

Company CEO Kevin Wasielewski wasn't all that clear on the reasons, but he did relay what Alvaro Masis, one of Origin’s technical support managers, said.

Essentially, he has found that AMD cards have stability issues and tend to overheat, as well as suffer performance drawbacks. The long time it takes to provide drivers, and the issues with scaling, were also brought up.

I haven't witnessed many of these failures myself, but I did see enough online reported issues with Radeon cards in CrossFire. Then again, it's not like NVIDIA's forums are squeaky clean on that front.

AMD hasn't commented on this yet. At least its CPUs aren't being let go.
