Chinese storage and peripheral connect specialist Orico has just launched the ORICO 7-Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Card, on its official website. This is a 7 USB 3.0 port add on PCIe card that will allow your computer to directly handle up to seven USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices.

It is powered by two VIA Labs controllers, but unfortunately we’re unable to find the technical controller specifications so that we’d be able to identify the controllers, or find out what is the total bandwidth of the device.

If the bandwidth is the apparent 500 MB/s that one PCIe lane can offer, it means that the card cannot supply the necessary bandwidth for even a single USB 3.0 device running at its potential maximum speed.

Usually, the user doesn’t connect more than two high-speed devices that will require a maximum of transfer speed, but it’s clear that you need minimum one PCIe 3.0 lane to offer the needed bandwidth for one such powerful USB 3.0 device.

The reason Orico’s USB 3.0 add on card is only PCIe 2.0 is beyond us.
