Orico figured it was time of a decidedly unusual drive enclosure, so it made the 9648RUSI3.

Since the name doesn't really tell us anything, we may as well give a description, starting with the fact that this isn't a random HDD shell.

Instead, it is a 1U rack, similar in size and shape to the ones used in servers.

Colored graphite black or silvery aluminum, it can hold up to four 3.5-inch 3 TB drives (SATA 6.0 Gbps support), for a total of 12 TB maximum capacity.

There is no network interface, so the 9648RUSI3 cannot act as a NAS device (network-attached storage). On the flip side, Orico did implement FireWire 800, USB 3.0 and eSATA 6.0 Gbps.

That said, the drives connected to the rack can be configured in RAID 0, 1, 0+1, JBOD.

According to Expreview, the price of Orico 9648RUSI3 is $480 / 360 Euro.

A 1u rack but with no network interface?! So who is going to buy this then? Certainly not business as it cannot be connected to a lan network.
