A bigger emphasis on traps and minions will make it stand out

Orcs Must Die, the popular action tower defense experience from Robot Entertainment, is going to see a brand-new release later this year, in the form of Orcs Must Die Unchained, a 5v5 competitive experience similar to multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games, but with a bigger emphasis on traps and minions.

Orcs Must Die 1 and 2 delivered a great experience that saw players control the War Mage and, in the sequel, the Sorceress, who had to defend rifts from the rampaging orcs. You could use your limited attacks to take on the horde but you could also employ a huge amount of different traps, not to mention summon allies to help you in battle.

Now, the Orcs Must Die experience is treading on new ground through Orcs Must Die Unchained, a new experience similar to MOBA games like League of Legends or Dota 2, as it boasts a 5v5 competitive mode, but with a bigger emphasis on a player's minions and traps.

"White-knuckle Fortress Siege action puts you into the thick of competitive siege warfare. Unleash your minions, charge into the heart of the enemy stronghold and build an impenetrable gauntlet of traps to hack, grind, flatten, gibletise and incinerate your foes. Your team must master both tactics to triumph," the studio said in a statement.

The story continues that of Orcs Must Die 2, as the War Mage and the Sorceress have rebuilt the order but must face off against a new and much better organized army called Unchained.

Players can control many different heroes, ranging from the aforementioned War Mage and Sorceress, to Blackpaw, Midnight, Stinkeye, or Bloodspike.

Players can also upgrade their characters, not to mention collect and improve their traps, weapons, and minions using all sorts of options.

"We’re incredibly excited to greatly expand the universe and style of gameplay in Orcs Must Die," said Robot Entertainment CEO Patrick Hudson. "After the first game, fans told us they wanted cooperative gameplay, and we were thrilled to deliver it in Orcs Must Die 2. After the sequel, we heard the cry for competitive gameplay."

"Orcs Must Die Unchained is an answer to that and much more. It’s a realization of Robot’s ambition for what the franchise could ultimately become. It’s bigger, deeper and meatier. We hope fans enjoy playing it as much as we have enjoyed testing it."

The alpha stage for Orcs Must Die Unchained is now underway, and you can secure access into it by buying one of the Founder's Packs, which includes not just alpha entry but also all sorts of exclusive in-game content such as a starter deck of trap cards, in-game gold, and more.

Orcs Must Die Unchained is out in late 2014 as a free-to-play PC experience. Check out a teaser gameplay video below.
