Italy has now its first black Minister, Cecile Kyenge. Since taking up office, she’s been the target of much abuse, which she’s handled with dignity and grace. The latest blow comes from none other than the Vice President of the Italian Senate.
In a recent speech cited by the Inquistr, Roberto Calderoli targeted Kyenge not for her political views or proposed economic measures, but for the color of her skin.
He compared her to an ape.
“I love animals… but when I see pictures of Kyenge I cannot but think of – even if I’m not saying she is one – the features of an orangutan,” Calderoli said.
He also accused her of wanting to set up “tribal traditions” in the country, denouncing her for it.
Though his comments have made headlines around the world, causing outrage and controversy, Calderoli is yet to apologize for them or, for that matter, acknowledge in any way the hubbub they caused.
