Alcatel-Lucent has announced that the company will perform a demonstration of the LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology in Romania this Monday.

Alcatel-Lucent's officials stated the test will be carried in Bucharest, using the company's platform from its own research lab in Timisoara.

Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent's main competitor on the Romanian telecom market, also plans to show a complete LTE solution in the next couple of weeks.

However, it seems that Orange and Alcatel-Lucent are the only companies that filed for experimental LTE network frequencies this year.

ANCOM, the regulatory communications institution in Romania, stated they have received three license requests for LTE network band using 2,5 - 2,69 GHz frequencies.

These have been approved for Alcatel-Lucent (1 license for Bucharest and 1 for Timisoara) and Orange Romania (1 license for Bucharest).

Even though these experimental licenses are given for a limited time, usually six months, network operators can ask for shorter-term licenses as well.

Alcatel-Lucent has requested a one-month (February-March) experimental license for Bucharest and a six-month license for Timisoara starting from January 2011.

The company's LTE test focused on applications and services such as: HD video streaming, HD video surveillance, HD videoconference with video call and mobile call, online gaming, broadband Internet access and Media Portal based applications.

Alcatel-Lucent is not the only company that demoed LTE technology in Romania. Orange Romania tested LTE technology on its own built network in Bucharest last year and is expected to commercially debut LTE services this year.

Even though LTE technology is exclusively used for data transfers at the moment, the first LTE mobile phones fully compatible with the VoLTE (Voice over LTE) standard have been showcased at the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
