Wireless carrier Orange announced on Tuesday the launch of a new social media service, called People Projects. Users will benefit from a new Facebook application, aimed at offering them the possibility to access their social network, while also creating online groups that plan on supporting or participating at community projects. The new service is in line with Orange’s brand vision, “Together we can do more,” and should offer people the possibility to ask online communities to help them in carrying out projects.

“The new service encourages web users to discover a number of projects or initiatives where they are based, get in touch with the project owners or other volunteers, and communicate with one another. It also lets the groups demonstrate their achievements and share them with the world,” is what the company said about the initiative. People Projects is set to kick off in the UK and France, and comes as an application built for social networks, while also enjoying its own website.

The new Facebook application offers users the possibility to easily manage and fulfill projects they've shared with others, no matter whether they are community-focused or personal. The features that the new app offers include: - a dedicated project page, tools to promote it and virtually reward those who help - a task list so you know who’s doing what - an events tool to organise meetings and get things moving - a timeline to make sure everything stays on track

There are three levels of interaction available for those who would like to support one project or another: viewing and distributing the project, expressing your support, putting yourself forward as an active participant. Those who own projects on Facebook are offered the possibility to include them on the Orange People Projects website, where a showcasing of the projects on Facebook is available. Moreover, Orange will also highlight a number of eight projects on the website's homepage.

“Launched in July 2008, our brand vision together we can do more highlights the positive power of the collective,” explains Caroline Mille, the Group’s head of communications. “Individuals today have growing aspirations to pool their initiatives and act together to tackle projects that they would not have been able to successfully achieve alone.” The People Projects by Orange is available for download for all Facebook users. Moreover, it seems that the app and service are also expected to soon become available for mobile phones.
