Optware has recently announced that it will distribute the first generation of HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) disc starting with the summer of 2006. These optical storage solutions are aimed mainly at companies.

The technology of holographic disc optical storage allows capacities of up to 1TB of data and the support has the dimension of a classic DVD.

These products are due for launch in June and they will store maximum 200GB of data. The format will have price tags of $80 and $100, and the first drives able to read and burn them will cost "only" $30.000.

Optware also plans to produce credit card sized discs, able to store 30GB. The company will also launch a "light" version of 5GB, due for release in 2007.

Optware's main competitor, InPhase company, announced at the beginning of the year the first prototypes of holographic discs which will allow capacities ranging from 200 GB to 1.6 TB to be stored.

Hitachi announced that it will soon start producing these 130 mm discs aimed at the InPhase systems, which are due for launch next year.
