Codemasters has officially announced Operation Flashpoint: Red River, the next installment in its military first person shooter simulation series. The new title will take place in Tajikistan along the Vakhsh River and will task players to fight in a fictional war based on current geopolitical themes involving the Chinese PLA and the US Marine Corps.

“Operation Flashpoint: Red River is being built around four player co-op online play, complete with a strong narrative, new enemies and combat scenarios to deliver gameplay that immerses players in the reality of war like never before. The new setting of Tajikistan is a diverse and exciting backdrop for the wide range of military challenges the US Marines face around the world in real life. We’re excited to push the series in new directions while staying true to the core tactical combat that is the hallmark of Operation Flashpoint,” said Sion Lenton, creative director of the game.

Red River is set to improve almost every aspect Dragon Rising, including the narrative of the single player campaign, the AI of both the squad and of the enemies, more comprehensive tutorials and air support options. The user interface will be getting updated as well with a streamlined inventory menu and better and more responsive controls. Like almost all other current-generation action games there will be a class-based upgrades system. As one ranks up, they will get better equipment to customize their load-out before a mission.

Another area of the game the developers are focusing on is the cooperative multiplayer. Players will be able to team up through a drop-in-drop-out matchmaking system and go through the main story campaign or other modes, such as escorting a convoy or retreating from an overwhelming enemy advance. Operation Flashpoint: Red River will be released sometime in 2011 for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC.
