Norwegian software company Opera has just announced that its highly popular Opera Mini mobile browser is being pre-loaded on a new Android-based smartphone from Nextel Brazil, namely the Motorola i886, which is exclusive at this wireless operator.

The Opera Mini browser will come preinstalled on the latest Direct Connect Push-to-Talk (PTT) device from NII Holdings, Inc., the leading provider of mobile telecoms services which operates under the Nextel brand in Latin America.

According to the company, they decided to make the move based on the impressive success that the Motorola i1 had in 2010. That handset was the very first PTT Android-powered smartphone in Latin America to include the Opera Mini 5 browser.

“We are proud to offer Opera Mini and its innovative features to our valuable subscribers in Latin America to enhance their experience with our differentiated services and applications,” said Bob Ewald, Vice President Product Management for NII Holdings.

Opera Mini is the most popular mobile browser in the world, enjoying a number of over 90 million active users, and being present on a wide range of mobile phones.

Some of the main features of the application would include Speed Dial, tabbed browsing, password manager and Opera Link, which was designed to synch users’ bookmarks on multiple devices. The browser is expected to prove a great option for Nextel's Motorola i886.

The Opera Mini browser also comes with a significant boost in speed when it comes to web browsing, courtesy of the special compression technology that Opera packed the device with, through which pages are compressed by up to 90 percent.

In addition to providing impressive speed improvements even on slower networks, the browser also offers great cost savings to both users and wireless carriers.

“Coming out of celebrating Carnival, we are equally celebrating the availability of the Opera Mini browser on a second Android device in Brazil,” said Lars Boilsen, CEO, Opera Software. “Partnering with Nextel to deliver a better browsing experience to millions of users is music to my ears.”

The Opera Mini browser will arrive on the Motorola i886 at Nextel Peru and Nextel Mexico as well.

The latest flavor of the browser, namely Opera Mini 6, was released on Tuesday at the CTIA Wireless expo, with important enhancements for all users. You can read more about the new release here.
