Opera Software and Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), the leading wireless carrier from the Philippines, has recently announced that Opera Mini has been selected to deliver the Web to SMART's over 40 million mobile-phone subscribers. According to the two companies, users will be able to download Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 5 over-the-air (OTA) from SMART websites.

Opera Mini, as most of you might already know, is one of the most popular mobile browsers around the world, and has been designed to fit on the small screens of mobile phones. Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 5 will also be pre-installed on SMART devices, and SMART also notes that the solutions will come to its users with special mobile websites that will load with just a few clicks.

“We have witnessed the value that the Opera Mini Web browser offers to our subscribers. They don't want to be limited in terms of what they can surf from their phones. Opera enables all of this, and still remains fast and cost effective,” Danilo J. Mojica, head of the Wireless Consumer Division, Smart Communications, said. “We are proud to offer Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 5, so that our customers can take advantage of the very latest in mobile Web technology.”

The Philippines is already seen as one of the leading users of Opera Mini in Southeast Asia, and the partnership between Opera and SMART will offer the solution to an even larger number of mobile-phone users than before. Opera Mini has seen a great success in the area due to its unique browser offering, which delivers the fastest, most full-featured web experience to almost all handsets on the market.

“The Philippines is a country with enormous growth potential, in terms of spreading the Web. By working together with SMART, we are able to reach an enormous group of Filipinos who may otherwise not have Web access,” Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software, added. “By offering the desktop Web experience on mobile phones, we are giving SMART subscribers a chance to truly engage with the world online.” Opera Mini 4 and Opera Mini 5 would soon arrive for free for SMART users, the software company pointed out.
